A speech given at the annual convention of the Liberty Party, which tried to fight slavery within the framework of the Constitution (as opposed to Garrison and his allies, who saw the Constitution as irrevocably tainted). The address helped propel the speaker, Salmon P. Chase, to national prominence; he later served in Lincoln's cabinet and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Here he argues: "It is our duty and our purpose to rescue the Government from the control of the slaveholders. . . . We believe that slaveholding in the United States is the source of numberless evils, moral, social and political . . . We believe that its removal can be effected peacefully, constitutionally, without real injury to any, with the greatest benefit to all" (page 8).
